Introduction

Australia has both a rich research record and commercial success in primary and other industries i.e. agriculture and industries such as wine, food, environment and resources.

Examples are BHP Billiton the world’s largest mining & resources company, and Fosters one of the world’s largest brewing and wine companies. Australian icons include the world famous red wine Grange Hermitage, white wines especially Chardonnay, James Halliday author of the “Australian Wine Companion” and Wolf Blass who has won “International Winemaker of the Year” award.

News & Opportunities

EU 7th Framework

The EU’s 7th Framework (FP7) is an example of funding for international cooperation, through which EU candidate countries are also eligible e.g. Turkey. FP7 themes of relevance to Australia and EU are:

1. Life sciences, genomics and biotechnology for health
2. Information society technologies
3. Nanotechnology and nanosciences, knowledge-based functional materials, new production processes and devices
4. Aeronautics and space
5. Food quality and safety
6. Sustainable development, global change and ecosystems
7. Citizens and governance in a knowledge-based society

If an entity is interested in participating it is highly advisable they find partners with common areas of interest, before any calls for proposals emerge.

Wine

Australian wine and expertise has had great international success in marketing and sales, winning awards and “flying winemakers” assisting wineries with new ideas and technologies.

QUEST has been assisting Corvus Winery of Bozcaada, an island in the Canakkale (Gallipoli) region of Turkey with placing an intern from Melbourne, Jonathan Melli and to market Corvus wines internationally. Grape varieties grown and processed by Corvus include Whites: Teneia, Zeleia and Reds: Vinium, Rarum & Aegea.

Corvus also produced a commemorative wine “PAX” 2005, made from blend of NZ, Turk and Australian semillon, in remembrance of the ANZAC’s & Turks WW1 Dardenelles campaign. Corvus was assisted in this pursuit by Chris Cameron wine maker at Pepper Tree Wines in the Hunter Valley.

Hungary has rich wine tradition famous for its Tokaj region, Egri Bikaver or “Bull’s Blood” and fine wines from the more temperate Villany region. QUEST can assist with wine industry tours of Hungary, targetted tastings and potential import strategy. For related Australian centres see Links

Agriculture, Food Technology & Environment

Australia is one of the world's largest primary or agricultural producers including wheat, wool, meat & livestock, dairy, fruit and vegetables, in addition to organic production. Australia's agricultural sector is incredibly open and competitive with no trade subsidies or tarriffs. Australia ranks third in the world as a dairy products exporter, after New Zealand and the European Union (EU).

Accordingly Australia has a lot of expertise to offer in project consulting and training in not just agriculture, but also food technology, environment and the business in general. For related Australian centres see Links

Mining & Resources

One of the most significant mining nations in the world, Australia has the world’s largest economic resources of lead, mineral sands, tantalum, uranium, silver and zinc. Australia has the third largest minerals sector, by value of production, after the US and South Africa. Australia exports minerals and mining equipment, services and technologies.
